Barberino Val D'Elsa

Barberino Val D’Elsa is a small hilltop town between Florence and Siena, on the historic Cassia road that connects  Florence to Rome, with its beautiful views of Chianti from the town, it has retained most of it’s original medieval personality.

Barberino was built with the stones of the nearby city of Semifonte which was completely destroyed in the year 1202 by the Florentines who were allied with the Pope of Rome against the Northern Empire. Semifonte had been built on this strategic site along with other well defended cities, as a part of a defence system along the south border.

At the end of the 16th Century, in the precise place where Semifonte once stood, the cappella with the same name as Brunelleschi’s majestic dome of the Cathedral of Florence (Duomo di Firenze) was built which the comune di Barberino uses to celebrate civil weddings. Ideal for small and medium sized groups, the surrounding area offers many excellent restaurants as settings for wedding receptions accommodation venues can be visited by following the link accommodation reception venues/ Chianti countryside.
