Castiglione della Pescaia is a beauty. One of the most romantic historical towns in Tuscany, if not in Italy. The medieval part of the town, which is still intact, is surmounted by it’s ancient castle and dominates from the top of the hill the whole of the Maremma and Grosseto coast, with a breath taking view over the long public ‘’ Le Marze’’ beach and the ‘Diaccia Botrona' natural Oasis, which is what remains of the old marshlands, frequented by flamingoes and herons, a paradise for birdwatching.

The town was built on high ground to defend it from the Saracen pirate attacks and most importantly to defend the population from malaria which thrived in the marshlands below until the middle of the last century. The new town which has developed around the port where the fishing boats unload their fresh fish every day, a sight that attracts many visitors who each year spend their holidays here, has managed to protect its self from both the assault of pirates and mass tourism. The adjacent countryside, still unspoilt in the hills, is undergoing a rapid transformation, just as around Bolgheri, due to the expansion of vineyards and wineries. The wines from Maremma are growing in popularity bringing with them the development of restaurants, hotels and other accommodation.
